Chronic Renal Insufficiency
A consequence of IgAN is chronic renal insufficiency (CRI), due to the gradual loss of glomeruli (a glomerulus being a little clump of tiny blood vessels that act as the filters in the kidneys). When caused by IgAN, this may be very mild for years, or even decades, or it may be relatively stable and never reach the more advanced stages of CRI in the person's lifetime. Many of the later symptoms IgAN patients may feel are from the CRI rather than the IgAN itself. The symptoms of CRI (also called chronic renal failure - or CRF) are much the same no matter which kidney disease is the cause. This section provides information that may be useful to IgAN patients as they transition into pre-end stage renal disease. Symptoms of CRI generally start being felt when the person slips under 50% kidney function (as measured by Glomerular Filtration Rate), and they become more prevalent as kidney function approaches 30% and then 20%.
